Print Finalization & Sealant Application : ZPrinter 450

1)      Details the proper steps to Seal a Printed Part from the ZPrinter450. dFab’s ZPrinter 450 utilizes a special powder, specifically engineered to seal and strengthen itself when sprayed with a Water and Epsom-Salt Mix. The process is straightforward, but here are some tips to ensure a successful Sealing.

i)        Find an Area

(1)    First, find an area free of debris and high-traffic. You will want a well-lit area. You will also look for a space that has zero-possibilities of overspray. This mixture WILL CRYSTALIZE AND RUIN ANY SURFACE IT COMES INTO CONTACT WITH! Please, if necessary, use cardboard, scrap foam, or plastic trash bags as printing partitions. The stainless steel sink is preferred.

ii)      Quantity

(1)    Don’t OVERSPRAY! Don’t UNDERSPRAY! Use your common sense as to how much spray you should use. If you overspray, the part becomes weak and soggy. If you under spray, the part will seal itself, but not enough to strengthen the part; and furthermore, prevents you from soaking anymore of the Sealant into the part. I recommend spraying just enough until you can see the water begin to ‘puddle-up’ on the part. No more, no less. If a part is extremely thin, it is better to under spray.

(2)    Additionally, I recommend using a plastic bag or wax paper as the bottom spray surface. This will prevent the part from sticking to its substrate.

iii)    Patience

(1)    Spray a little, and take a break! Let the part dry for about 30 minutes after the primary coat. Then go in for the second round. Be sure the part is strong enough to move before attempting to rotate for additional coats on unsprayed areas.
