Laser Systems

dFAB’s Facilities include (2) Epilog Legend EXT, 75 Watt Laser Systems; also known as a ‘Laser Cutter’ or ‘Laser Engraver’. The Laser Cutter features a 36″x24″ work-zone; in which thin sheets of Plastic, Lumber, or Paper Materials/Products are placed. Materials can range in size, but usually are less than 1/4″. Once the material is placed, the Operator will develop a CAD File of the geometry required to cut, score, or engrave. The User then sends this file to the Laser Cutter after adjusting a few settings, and the Equipment begins processing the geometry. The Laser Equipment fires a Co2 Laser, that reflects over several mirrors, through a focusing lens, and onto the placed material. The Laser immediately vaporizes any material within its path, providing an efficient method of cutting, scoring or engraving several parts in a small amount of time; leaving the User with precisely cut parts and pieces for their eventual disciplinary use. Acrylic, Paper Products, and Bass Wood produce the best results.

OVERVIEW
Access:
The Laser Cutters are available to Students within an Architecture Undergraduate or Graduate Program, or those whom have attended a training session. Training sessions are available through dFAB affiliated courses. After training, Students are approved to create Equipment Reservations for Laser Cutting Equipment. Equipment Policies and Procedures are posted here, but are also discussed during training.

Important Notes:
1. Approved Materials: Acrylic, Mirrored Acrylic, Cardboard, Paper, Mat Board, Museum Board, YUPO, Bass Wood, Plywood. (Please check with Manager regarding Material Selections)

2. Disallowed Materials: Any material containing Chloride or Vinyl (i.e. PVC), Glass Mirrors, Foam Core, Metals. (Please check with Manager regarding add’l Material Selections)

3. The Laser Equipment is for Academic Research & coursework ONLY. Crafts & Gifts are disallowed on this Equipment.

4. When using Painted Material, ensure the paint is DRY before cutting.

5. The Filtration and Exhaust System must be turned on before any cutting begins and left running for at least 5 minutes after cutting to remove residual smoke and fumes from the laser cutting chamber. Wait 30 Seconds after job completion before opening the laser cutter to prevent smoke and fumes from entering the room.

6. Fire is a primary concern when utilizing this Equipment; as a result, you are REQUIRED to stay within the Laser Cutting Room/Area while your Job is running. If a Fire should occur, STOP the Job, and notify dFAB Staff immediately.
